When Vogue turned down photographer
Irving Penn's idea to go to San Francisco
to shoot a story on the California counterculture,
the magazine Look took him up on the idea.
The resulting January 1968 photo essay showcased
(from top): a hippie family, the Family Dog,
the Hells Angels, Big Brother & the
Holding Company, and the Grateful Dead.
"Nothing's separate—job, rehearsal, living,
the way we dress...To us, it's just a lifestyle,
a total thing," said the members of Janis Joplin's group.
