The Prince is a Joker

The American artist Richard Prince considers his "joke paintings" to be abstract art, "especially in Europe, if you can't speak English."

"I'm surprised at the reaction to the 'Nurse' paintings. I’ve never felt that I had to put out work that I actually liked... just because it’s out there doesn’t mean that I have to stand behind it."

Prince first became well-known for being a "rephotographer," re-photographing the works of others. The piece above sold for $1 million in 2005.
